Three children sit outdoors on dirt; two girls look down while one holds a pink pencil, and a third child is seen from behind in the foreground.

What to look for

Look at what children are doing with their hands. A photo of a settled room shows chosen work, not worksheets: a few children at a table, a teacher kneeling beside one child, shelves arranged so a three-year-old can reach and put things back. Small groups matter more than whole-class rows. Follow the order of the shelves and you can read how the year moves from simple to harder.

A group of seven children stand together in a hallway, one holding crutches, with lockers and a green wall visible behind them.
