The curriculum is broad on purpose. Specialty classes include Spanish, music, art, physical education, and technology. Each one is planned to meet national standards and support growth in every area. Children try new skills, follow their interests, and build the habits of curious learners who are ready for what comes next. At Brighton School in Mountlake Terrace, this runs alongside the classroom day for ages 3 through 8th grade.
Spanish covers speaking, listening, and writing, and connects to real-world experiences. Children see how another language helps them understand another culture and talk with people around the world. The goal is comfort, not just a subject on a schedule. They practice by speaking with friends, singing songs, and reading books.
Music class covers the basics: rhythm, melody, and how sounds blend. Children try different instruments, use technology, and express themselves creatively. Teachers guide them step by step as they create and perform. Group performances teach them to work together, and they build confidence on stage.
In art, children work with different materials to learn techniques and make pieces of their own. Teachers guide them in building creative thinking and problem-solving. They explore color, shapes, and textures, and start to see connections between art, history, and other subjects. Making and talking about art helps them understand the world around them, and they are excited to share their work.
Physical education teaches children why staying active and making healthy choices matter for a balanced life. They run, jump, and play team sports to build strength and balance. Working with each other, they practice teamwork and how to support their friends. These skills help them feel confident and strong as they grow.
Technology class covers finding, sorting, and sharing information. Children learn coding, typing, and tools like word processors, spreadsheets, and graphics. They also learn to be responsible with technology as they work with others. They see how these tools solve everyday problems, and gain confidence to take on more advanced skills.
Specialty classes sit alongside the regular classroom day. Children rotate out for Spanish, music, art, physical education, and technology, each planned to meet national standards. In a typical week they might sing a song in Spanish, try an instrument, work with clay or paint, run and jump in the gym, and practice typing or coding. Teachers guide each class step by step, so children build skills without feeling rushed.
